Specialty gas mixtures for lung diffusion and pulmonary function testing
Licensed practitioners utilize lung diffusion mixtures to perform pulmonary function testing. Pulmonary function tests are used to evaluate heart and lung function and efficiency. These are diagnostic tests that are used in areas such as intensive care, neonatal care, rehabilitation, wellness and disability evaluations, and in the diagnosis of disorders of the pulmonary, gastrointestinal, and cardiovascular systems. In a pulmonary function test, the patient inhales the lung diffusion mixture which contains a small percentage of carbon monoxide. When the patient exhales, the breath is evaluated to determine how well the carbon monoxide has been diffused in the lungs. The helium component of the lung diffusion mixture determines the lung volume. Another use of the lung diffusion mixture is for calibration of the analyzing equipment. SCI Analytical produces lung diffusion mixtures to very precise specifications.
